Word Study Companion

You read “seek” and you keep moving.

But in Hebrew, “seek” is three different words. Each one says something the English cannot say.

שָׁחַר — shachar. Seek at dawn. Before the day starts. That is what David did in Psalm 63, writing from a wilderness with nothing working in his favor.

דָּרַשׁ — darash. Seek by deliberate inquiry. The word the Chronicler used for every king who prospered. Seek the way you would consult a wise authority — with expectation of an answer.

בָּקַשׁ — baqash. Seek with urgency. The word of someone who must find what they are looking for.

Three Hebrew words. Three dimensions of what it means to seek God. All compressed into one English word that you just read past.
